// 2011 Sendai Earthquake & Tsunami

On March 11th 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off of the North East coast of Japan. As shown in the following image, the resultant tsunami moved inland, destroying everything in its path and creating a crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

As of March 17 2011:
-According to the National Police Agency of Japan the official deathtoll is currently 4,314 people but is expected to exceed 10,000 by the time the nation has started to rebuild.
-More than 440,000 have been evacuated, while hundreds (if not thousands) more are awaiting help in isolated areas.
-Around 850,000 households in the North of Japan do not have electricity, despite near-freezing weather. At least 1.5 million homes are without running water.
-A minimum of 88,000 buildings have been damaged, with over 7,400 completely destroyed. This is estimated to be approximately $183.7 billion in damage.

There are currently 114 countries and 24 international agencies offering assistance. Already teams from 14 regions have arrived to help.
